Why Does Everyone Need a “Comfort Show”?
You know the one.
The show you’ve already watched.
Probably more than once.
You know what happens. You know who says what. You know which episode is going to make you laugh and which one you’re probably going to skip.
And yet…
you’re watching it again.
Not because there’s nothing else to watch.
There are approximately 8,000 shows sitting on your streaming app right now.
You could discover something new.
You could be adventurous.
You could finally watch that show everyone has been recommending for six months.
But no.
You press play on the same show you watched last month.
Because apparently your brain has decided:
new show = work
show I already know = peace
There’s something ridiculously comforting about knowing exactly what you’re getting.
No complicated plot to remember.
No new characters to Google.
No wondering who that suspicious person is.
You already know.
You can watch it while eating, scrolling, doing homework, folding clothes, staring at the ceiling…
or, most realistically, while doing absolutely none of those things.
And sometimes you don't even properly watch it.
It’s just there.
Playing in the background while you exist.
You know the dialogue so well that you can accidentally join in.
Someone walks into the room and hears you saying the next line.
They look at you.
You look at them.
No explanation.
They don't need one.
It's your show.
Your little emotional support television.
And honestly, I think everyone has one.
Maybe yours is a sitcom.
Maybe it's an old cartoon.
Maybe it's a series you watched during one very specific phase of your life and somehow never escaped.
Maybe you've watched it so many times that the characters feel less like fictional people and more like people who unfortunately live in your head rent-free.
But that's the thing.
Sometimes you don't want a plot twist.
You don't want suspense.
You don't want to wonder what happens next.
You just want to know what happens next.
So you press play.
Again.
And again.
And yes, you could watch something new.
But…
you already know this episode is good.
